“Dar es Salaam witnessed an unexpected diplomatic flare-up on Saturday during the high-stakes EAC-SADC summit on the escalating crisis in eastern DRC, as African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki was asked to leave the closed-door leaders’ session. The summit, which began with opening speeches by Kenyan President William Ruto and Zimbabwean leader Emmerson Mnangagwa, chairs of the EAC and SADC respectively, quickly descended into confusion when the master of ceremonies asked Faki to leave the meeting just before the start of private deliberations. indicates a Kenyan media consulted by Mingamedianet.net.

The same source indicates that Mr. Faki complied with this request from the master of ceremonies.

Shortly after, the organizers asked for the President of the African Union Commission to return to the room but he did not grant this request.

“God knows who gave this instruction and why it was canceled. But at that time, Faki refused to return,” reports Kenyan Foreign Policy, citing a diplomatic source.

This diplomatic incident comes a few days after the Congolese government clearly disagreed with the position of the African Union Commission, which in a recent press release described the M23 rebels as an armed opposition.

The joint meeting of the EAC and SADC should determine a new roadmap for the resolution of insecurity in the east of the DRC, the source of the conflict between Kinshasa and Kigali.
